Here is an explanation to how candlestick charts are read. They give a more accurate reading to price action than the basic line graph and will be used almost all the time for our analysis. Refer to the first picture- the "open" and "close" refers to the time-frame of the chart. For example, if you're reading a chart on the daily time frame, then each candlestick will represent one day. If you're looking at a one hour chart (1H) or four hour chart (4H) then each candle would represent one hour or four hours respectively. As price fluctuates during the day, the candles will rise and fall for the duration of the selected time period before a new candle is formed. The body of the candles (the fat part) will indicate the overall change from the opening of the candle to the close. The spikes, more commonly known as wicks, represent the highs and lows of each candle. If a candle closes above its opening price then it will be a green candle (bullish). If it closes below the opening price then it'll be a red candle (bearish).

In the next slide I attached a screenshot of Bitcoin's price action during its historic bull run in December of 2017. This is the weekly time-frame, meaning that each candlestick represents price action over the course of one week. In this example, the weekly candle opened at $11,290. At some point during the week, price wicked all the way up to $19,697 and all the way down to $11,000 before closing at $15,290. If we wanted to know which wick occurred first, we would examine the chart at a lower time frame (such as the daily chart).

You will hear a lot about "bulls" and "bears", too. Simply put, if price action is "bullish" or on a "bull run" this means that price is going up. The opposite is true for "bearish" or "bear run". An easy way to remember this is to think that when a bull attacks with its horns, it is thrusting upwards. When a bear is attacking, its pouncing down onto its prey. These terms and graphs are used across most if not all forms of trading and investing.
